Ladbrokes Online Bingo History
Bingo is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world and it's now estimated that 85% of all bingo players are playing their games online. The popular game can be traced back to as early as the 16th century so here we've taken a look back at the history of online bingo
There's much speculation regarding the origin of bingo, with many players believing it began in Italy as an adaptation of the Italian Lottery, ‘Lo Guioco del Lotto D'Italia'. However the most common theory is that bingo began in the US in the early 1920's. Here, the game was played in carnivals and country fairs and was known as "Beano". The host would pull numbered discs from a cigarette box and announce it to the players who, in course, would mark off their cards with beans- hence, the name. The first person to mark a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line on their card was determined the winner.
It wasn't until 1929 that Edwin S. Lowe, a toy salesman, overheard an enthusiastic beano player yell "bingo!' by accident during a game at a carnival in Atlanta. Feeling that this was a much catchier name, Lowe began to stage his own games under the name ‘bingo'. The popularity of bingo increased rapidly in the US and by 1934 an estimated 10,000 bingo games were being played every week throughout America.
In 1968, bingo was formalized in the UK through the UK gaming act. By 1986 the National Bingo Game, which saw the same bingo game played simultaneously throughout the UK, was legalised and became a huge success. The National Bingo Game continues today but now there are more popular methods of playing bingo.
As technology advanced, online bingo emerged on the scene in 2003 in the form of online bingo sites. Online bingo uses random number generators under strictly regulated conditions to ensure fair games for every user. It is estimated that over 3 million people all over the world play online bingo every week in the comfort of their own homes and win some huge prizes in the process.
